Cholesteatoma and Ear Infections

These potentially serious conditions need expert management, and many require surgery. Whilst uncommon in general ENT Cholesteatoma care is a significant part of my practice.

If you are suffering with repeated ear infections, it is important to establish whether there is a structural problem with the ear itself.

Most commonly the infection is in the outer ear canal and can be managed without surgery. However, some cases reveal a perforation in the tympanic membrane, which may require surgical repair to reduce infections.

In some cases, examination reveals that skin from the ear canal and drum has started to migrate into the middle part of the ear. Here it can cause chronic infection and damage the hearing and balance apparatus of the ear.

I will be able to diagnose and treat this for you in a number of ways – most cases require surgery, and a variety of different techniques are possible. The pros and cons of each option will be discussed with you at the time.
